From An Eames Primer (2002) by Eames Demetrios:
In December 1973, the Nobel Prizes were awarded in Stockholm, Sweden. Among the winners was Leo Esaki, a scientist at IBM, who won a share of the Physics prize (he shared his part with Ivan Giaever for their work on quantum tunneling), the first time an IBM scientist had won a Nobel Prize. Tom Watson, Jr., the recently retired head of IBM (and still quite powerful on its board of directors), decided the company should hold a special dinner in honor of the physics laureates after their return to the United States.
